What is a coping mechanism?
- A coping mechanism is something a person does to handle things like emotions after a tragic event. There are many different ways an individual could cope with difficult things, there are some good ones and bad ones. The good ones will help the individual take control over things like their emotions and help them over-come the tragic event, however bed coping mechanisms may seem good at the time in the short-term but in the long-term will hurt themselves or other people more.
Good coping mechanisms
- There are many different good coping mechanisms and individual could have such as reading, exercising, writing, hanging out with friends, talking to someone they trust and even hobbies such as a sport of cooking.
- These good coping mechanisms could help the individual calm down or re-gain happiness when upset, having flashbacks or if something set them off, the individual could do something like going for a walk instead of crying or lashing out and doing something they shouldn't do.
Bad coping mechanisms
- There are many different bad coping mechanisms and individual could have such as usage of drugs and over use of alcohol, smoking, over use of sex or exercise, the individual could do things that would hurt themselves intentionally, hurting other people possible to make themselves feel better and stronger or even not eating at all.
- Many people could develop bad coping mechanisms for a range of things, but the most common is to punish themselves because they think they deserve pain because they are a terrible person.
